The results of these elections will determine the composition of the School Council for the period between January 2017 and December 2018.<\/p>\n<p>School Councils at the Primary and Secondary Level are made up of\u00a0a President, the Head of School, three parents\u00a0and three members of the teaching staff. Both parents\u00a0and members of the teaching staff are elected, the former by parents\/guardians of\u00a0students and the latter by the school\u2019s teaching grades, KGAs and LSAs<\/p>\n<p>The role of these Councils is not limited to fund raising and similar activities.<\/p>\n<p>School Councils are entitled to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>administer the funds and assets of the school.<\/li>\n<li>discuss the school environment and the school amenities and propose ways to ameliorate them.<\/li>\n<li>discuss the curriculum and the educational services offered by the school and make suggestions to the Directorate of Education regarding changes or additions to the<\/li>\n<li>Alert the Minister of Education, or any official nominated by him, to shortcomings existing in the school or other matters related to the school<\/li>\n<li>discuss and monitor any environmental problems<\/li>\n<li>discuss any problems related to students\u2019 well-being<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Parents are encouraged to\u00a0use their right of\u00a0contesting and to vote in the forthcoming School Council elections<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>As Parents\u00a0your participation matters<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Important Dates:<\/p>\n<p><strong>9th January 2017:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Opening of Nominations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>18th January 2017:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Closure\u00a0of Nominations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>31<sup>st<\/sup> January 2017:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Voting day (<\/strong><em>you can also send your vote through the post or<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 with your\u00a0son\/daughter)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS 2017-2018<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>School Council Elections are being held as on\u00a0<strong>Tuesday, 31st January 2017\u00a0<\/strong>in all State Schools in Malta and Gozo<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The School Council is made up of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A President nominated by the Minister for Education and Employment<\/li>\n<li>A Secretary \/ Treasurer who is the Head of School<\/li>\n<li>Three representatives elected by and from the Teaching Staff<\/li>\n<li>Three representatives elected by and from the Parents\/Guardians whose children attend the particular School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(In the case of\u00a0post-16 students the three members are elected by and from the students)<\/p>\n<p>School Councils are regulated by the 1988 Education Act\u00a0 and\u00a0 School Councils Regulations of 1993 as amended in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>School Councils are an important forum where teachers and parents work together for the benefit of the children and the school.<\/p>\n<p>While the School Council is not responsible, and should not interfere, in the teaching and maintenance of discipline in school, it has the faculty of<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Administrating the funds and assets of the School<\/li>\n<li>Discussing the school environment and the school amenities and propose ways to ameliorate them.<\/li>\n<li>discussing the curriculum and the educational services offered by the school and make suggestions to the Department of Education regarding changes or additions to the curriculum.<\/li>\n<li>discussing and monitoring any environmental, transport and other problems<\/li>\n<li>organising fund raising activities as well as educational and cultural activities both for students and parents.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>General Information<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>School Council Election are being held on\u00a0<strong>Tuesday, 31st January 2017<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nominations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Nominations for these Councils open\u00a0 on the\u00a0<strong>9th January 2017 and close on the 18th January 2017 at 1.00pm<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Nomination forms can be picked from the school where the student attends. One \u00a0can also apply for nomination through the Ministry of Education and Employment website.<\/li>\n<li>Parents and guardians of students\u00a0can stand for election and vote for the School Council at the school where their children attend.<\/li>\n<li>Only one member from each family can participate as a candidate for the same school.<\/li>\n<li>Parents can contest the elections for one or more Schools Council as long as their children attend those schools.<\/li>\n<li>In the case of Resource Centres, only parents whose children are registered as full time students can participate in the elections, both as candidates as well as voters.<\/li>\n<li>Parents of students in the last year of school can be nominated for the elections. Once their children finish school, it is up to them to decide whether or not to continue their term.<\/li>\n<li>Parents who are also teachers can be nominated both as Teacher Representatives as well as Parent Representatives on the same Council but if they are elected for both posts they have to choose one of them. Teachers whose children attend a different school from where they teach can be Teacher Representatives in their school and Parent Representatives in their children\u2019s school.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Voting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>Every parent\/guardian is entitled to a Voting Document.<\/li>\n<li>The voting document is to be sent with the student or by post.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>11.The election process for the School Councils is known as &#8216;first past the post&#8217; whereby voters are asked to mark their preferences by not more than three &#8216;X&#8217;s&#8217;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li>The Voting Document is to be sent to the school either by post or in a sealed envelope by child mail.\u00a0<strong><em>Votes that are received at school after the 31st January 2017\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>will be considered as\u00a0\u00a0invalid. Parents can opt to cast their vote on\u00a0the<strong>31st\u00a0 January 2017\u00a0<\/strong>at the school indicated\u00a0(during school hours). In that case they have to present the Voting Document\u00a0 sent to them.
