1st and 3rd in the Malta Robotics Olympiad 2018 – Lego Sumo Challenge
Six teams from Maria Regina College Mosta Secondary participated in the Malta Robotics Olympiad 2018 – Lego Sumo Challenge on Friday 20th April, mentored by Mr Joseph Vella and assisted by Ms Marisa Bugeja. Being their first time, the students’ expectations were low, but the excitement, team spirit and support was impressively high. The challenge consisted of building a 15cm by 15cm robot from Lego parts and program it to autonomously detect and push an opponent out of an 80cm diameter ring. Seven students from Computing Year 10 classes formed two teams and prepared for the challenge during mid-day breaks. Computing Year 9 students formed 4 teams and worked on the task as part of their coursework. Participating in this big event was already a thrill … however watching one of the Year 9 teams getting through bravely to the 3rd place after being knocked out by their Year 10 friends in the semi-finals brought a shiver … and then watching the Year 10 team winning the MRO18 Lego Sumo Challenge was a blast.
We hope that this opportunity to come together as schools under one tent, thanks to Mr James Catania (EO ICT) and Mr Josmar Borg (EO Computing) who organised the event, will be offered again next year. It is hoped that more teams take part in similar events to experience one of a kind emotions of such a learning challenge.
Congratulations are in order to all participants while hoping that together with their keen supporters they cherish this unique experience. Thanks for inspiring everyone present.
