LIVE-IN – IL-KATINA

A group of students, aged between 11 to 15, participated in a live-in called Il-Katina which focused on healthy lifestyles held at M’Xlokk Youth Activity Centre. The young people learnt about and shared experiences on the multi-dimensional aspects of healthy living including food, physical activity, environment and relationships, through active participation. The live-in was organised jointly by the Youth Workers employed by the Department for Student Services and working within the following colleges: Maria Regina College, St Claire College, St George Preca College and St Theresa College. More joint activities like this will surely be organised between these colleges in the near future.

Grupp sabiħ ta’ studenti tal-età bejn il-11 u l-15-il sena pparteċipaw f’Live-in imsejjaħ ‘Il-Katina’ bit-tema Healthy Lifestyles li seħħ f’Marsaxlokk Youth Activity Centre. Iż-żgħażagħ tkellmu u qasmu esperjenzi dwar aspetti varji ta’ kif għandna ngħixu aħjar speċjalment fejn jidħol l-ikel, attività fiżika, ambjent u relazzjonijiet. Dan sar permezz ta’ parteċipazzjoni attiva. Il-live-in kien organizzat mill-Youth Workers li huma ingaġġati mad-Dipartiment tas-Servizzi għall-Istudent u jaħdmu f’dawn il-kulleġġi: il-Kulleġġ Maria Regina, il-Kulleġġ Sta Klara, il-Kulleġġ San Ġorġ Preca u l-Kulleġġ Sta Tereża. Huwa maħsub li jkun hemm iktar attivitajiet konġunti fil-futur bħal din bejn dawn il-Kulleġġi.

SuperTmatik Mental Math Championship, an international mathematics competition for 6-15 year old pupils.

The central principle of this championship is to develop student competence in mathematics from the start of schooling by constructive play, thereby motivating and involving them in the learning process. The main objectives of the championship are to:

  • promote interest in mental maths;
  • develop skills in number and mental maths;
  • reinforce the learning of mathematics through play;
  • discover and celebrate talent in mental calculation.

Through SuperTmatik there will be differentiation in teaching, greater motivation, ICT in the classroom and definitely learning in a fun way.

What is the SuperTmatik mental maths game?

SuperTmatik is a developmental teaching card game aimed at motivating students to learn and enjoy maths. The product of innovative ingenuity, the SuperTmatik mental maths game is in essence a key teaching tool to improve calculation skills. It is fully differentiated, catering not only for different age groups, but also different levels of ability.

How to participate?

For your students to participate, all you need to do is to register your school for entry into the competition. Once your school has been registered, the next step is to teach students how to play the game and allow them to practise with their peers. The initial stages of the competition are played within the school, and the names of the school finalists are then sent to the championship organisers to be entered to play in the Grand International Online competition. That is all you need to get started!

Last scholastic year at Mellieha Primary School, for the very first time, our head of school Ms Mary Rose Cordina decided to introduce the SuperTmatik game for year 4 students.  Class teachers agreed to start preparing children during the scholastic year for this maths game.   I have to admit that these were sessions which children and teachers alike used to look forward to.  We would like to thank Ms Joanne Vella the Maths support teacher and the Maths support team led by the EO Ms Melanie Sammut for their help and support.

This scholastic year this game was introduced also to our Year 3 and Year 5 students.  Two students from each year group participated in this online SuperTmatic mental Maths online completion, in Category 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

Last year Hayden Micallef and Daniel Peterson were chosen to take part in the online SuperTmatik mental Math online competition in Category 2.  Hayden placed 1st and Daniel placed 3rd out of 24,830 students from 65 nationalities.

Once again this year Hayden Micallef placed 1st in Category 3 and Daniel Peterson place 6th in the same Category.  You are our superheroes. Keep on cultivating this passion for Mathematics.  Over all once again Malta placed 3rd.  We’re so proud of our students.  Keep up the good work teachers.  Well done boys!!!

National Enterprise Support Awards 2016

The National Enterprise Support Awards are organised by the Commerce Department and the Enterprise Policy Directorate and Schemes within the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business. These Awards are not just a competition but are intended to foster more awareness of the importance of entrepreneurship both on a local and on a national level.

The Maria Regina College Dun Manwel Attard Young Adult Education Resource Centre presented the in-house sheltered workshop initiative in the category: Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship. Such category recognises national and local initiatives by authorities or public/private partnerships that promote corporate social responsibility among small and medium sized enterprises. This category will also recognise efforts to promote entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups such as the unemployed, especially long term unemployed, legal migrants, people with disability or people from ethnic minorities.

Our Centre was awarded this prestigious award for the first time. Like other initiatives in our Centre this award certifies the coherence of our Centre Policies with the actual Government Social and Economical policies vis-a-vis people with disabilities.
